What is virtual organising?

Since the beginning of the Covid-19, many corporates, startups, scaleups and SMEs have been forced by lockdowns to virtual organise their company and fast. Introducing hybrid working, working at home and remote management. What is virtual organising?

One of the great myths from the Industrial Revolution is that a corporate, a startup, a scaleup or any SME has to grow into a bulky large bureaucratic organisation with many layers if you attract more customers.

In our current time of the Internet, fast bandwidth and smartphones, that is actually no longer the case. Why? You can grow and scale using ICT with the virtual organisation as organisational design. By implementing hybrid working, working at home and remote management for instance.

What is virtual organising? Here is my definition.

Virtual organising is designing and implementing a virtual organisational design, characterized by the absence of a shared physical space between managers & employees working in the organisation. The virtual organisation members work together through telecommunication.

Particularly as a result of the rise of the internet and new technology in general, including inexpensive bandwidth and smarthone the feasibility of virtual organising increased sharply. For corporates, for startups, for scaleups and for solopreneurs.

Formal and informal virtual organizations.

It should be noted here that it can be a formal or an informal virtual organisational form. Many companies became a virtual organisation in 1-day because of local lockdowns and everybody had to start to work from home. And think of all the informal organisational forms of virtual organisations like online communities, groups on LinkedIn, on Facebook or on other social media platforms.
