Nacht over Nederland, Night Over The Netherlands – A Haunting Chronicle of Occupation
One of the books I inherited from my mother when she passed in 1997, is ‘Nacht over Nederland’, ‘Night over The Netherlands’ (see the image above this post).
Nacht over Nederland (Night over the Netherlands) is a harrowing journalistic account of the five-year German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II from May 1940 to May 1945. Published in 1946 by Ons Vrije Nederland, the book offers a stark and unflinching portrayal of the suffering, resistance, and resilience of the Dutch people.
The text was written by M.J. Adriani Engels and G.H. Wallagh, two journalists who experienced the occupation firsthand. Their vivid and often heart-wrenching descriptions including pictures paint a vivid picture of the hardships faced by the Dutch population, including hunger, deprivation, and the constant threat of violence.
In the book Nacht over Nederland, the styles of three underground artists complemented each other:
- Kees Bantzinger: He designed the cover illustration for the book. Bantzinger was a versatile artist known for his drawings and illustrations.
- Maarten Toonder: He created the title illustration for the book. Toonder is best known as the creator of the comic characters Olivier B. Bommel and Tom Poes. During the war, he worked at De Telegraaf and was a member of the Nederlandsche Kultuurkamer.
- Peter van Reen: He contributed 25 illustrations in black-and-white to the book. Van Reen was active as an illustrator, and his work contributed to the visual documentation of the occupation years.

Their underground artwork captures the bleak reality of life under the German occupation, from the empty streets and bombed-out buildings to the fear and despair etched on the faces of the people.
Nacht over Nederland is a significant historical document that offers a valuable insight into the experiences of the Dutch people during one of the darkest periods in their history. It remains a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom and the human cost of war.
