Types of Nude Art and Nude Photography Banned by the Nazis

The Nazis under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels in Nazi Germany banned a wide range of nude art and nude photography that did not align with their ideological, moral, or cultural objectives. These restrictions were enforced as part of their broader campaign to control artistic expression and eliminate what they perceived as subversive or “degenerate” influences.

Nude Art and Nude Photography Banned by the Nazis:

✔️ Modernist and Avant-Garde Nude Art:

  • Art movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Dadaism were considered “degenerate” (Entartete Kunst) and banned outright.
  • Nude works by artists like Egon Schiele or Oskar Kokoschka, which explored psychological depth, sexuality, or non-idealized human forms, were condemned.
  • The Nazis regarded these styles as a rejection of traditional European aesthetics and moral values.

✔️ Art by Jewish or Politically Opposed Artists:

  • Works by Jewish artists or those critical of the Nazi regime were systematically banned, regardless of style or subject matter.
  • For example, nude art by artists like Chaim Soutine or others from the Bauhaus school, which was closely associated with modernism and progressive ideals, was targeted.

✔️ Erotic or Pornographic Nude Photography:

  • Erotic or explicitly sexualized nude photography and art were strictly forbidden, as the Nazis saw them as morally corrupt and decadent.
  • Publications featuring erotic nudity, such as those common during the liberal Weimar Republic, were shut down, and the materials were destroyed.

✔️ Feminist and Subversive Depictions of Nudity:

  • Art that challenged traditional gender roles or celebrated female empowerment through nudity was censored.
  • Any works that depicted nudity as a means of personal liberation or political critique were banned, as they conflicted with the Nazi ideal of women as submissive mothers and homemakers.

✔️ Non-Idealized Depictions of the Human Body:

    • Nude works that showed aging, illness, disability, or other traits inconsistent with the Nazi concept of racial and physical “purity” were rejected.
    • The regime celebrated only the “perfect” female and male Aryan body (see above this blog the statues produced for the Olympic Games in Berlin 1936) and suppressed representations that deviated from this ideal.

✔️ Abstract and Symbolic Nude Art:

    • Abstract depictions of nudity, which did not conform to realistic or classical ideals, were viewed as a threat to the Nazi aesthetic of order and clarity.
    • Symbolic or metaphorical nude works that strayed from naturalistic representation were labeled as nonsensical or subversive.

✔️ Nude Art with Religious or Mystical Themes Outside of Christianity:

    • Depictions of nudity tied to non-Christian spiritual or mystical traditions were banned as they conflicted with the Nazi’s co-opted Christian and pagan narratives.

✔️ Art and Photography Associated with Non-European Cultures:

    • Nude depictions inspired by African, Asian, or other non-European traditions were suppressed as part of the regime’s emphasis on Aryan racial superiority.

      Summary:

The Nazis banned any form of nude art or nude photography that was erotic, abstract, modernist, politically subversive, or ideologically inconsistent with their vision of racial and cultural purity. Including people that had not a perfect body. They permitted only those works that idealized the female and male Aryan body and reinforced their propaganda, while actively destroying works they deemed “degenerate” or morally corrupt.

It is concerning to see that The 3 Digital Gatekeepers of Global Morality, OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, are now banning any form of nude art and nude photography in their AI-systems and LLMs, of so called Banned Explicit AI Content for all of their users worldwide. Thus ignoring regional legal frameworks like the EU AI Act and national legal frameworks in member states of the EU for instance. A frightening new form of global online censorship.
