So what’s behind this digital “no” from AI Big Tech?
Let’s unpack the three main reasons behind this censorship-like filtering and content moderation:
1. Corporate Risk and Brand Management
Big Tech platforms are risk-averse by design. When you rely on advertisers, enterprise clients, and investors, the last thing they want is a PR disaster tied to AI-generated nudity—even artistic or non-explicit.
AI Big Tech companies fear being accused of enabling:
- ‘Inappropriate, sexualized content or ‘adult content’
- Exploitation of likenesses (deepfakes or lookalikes)
- Generation and distribution of “NSFW content” or borderline illegal content
So instead of setting nuanced rules, they often go for blanket bans, even in countries and regions like in the EU where nudity or semi-nudity in art or media is legal and culturally accepted—like in much of Europe.
2. Cultural and Moral Bias (Especially U.S.-Centric)
Most major AI Big Tech companies and social media platforms like Meta and LinkedIn are legally registered and headquartered in the United States. Where the cultural context around nudity in general is more conservative compared to many parts of the world. Including The Netherlands and other European memberstates for instance. - Even semi-nude fashion-style images trigger blocks and are considered ‘banned content’ and are blocked.
This reflects a bias embedded in training data and automated moderation rules but also in human moderation by those AI Big Tech companies —favoring U.S. cultural norms over legal and artistic standards in other countries and regions like in EU memberstates and in the EU AI Act.

3. The Rise of Christian Nationalist Influence
Increasingly, content moderation at scale is being shaped by moral politics in the U.S.—especially the influence of Christian nationalist movements like “Make America Christian Again” (MACA). These groups lobby for stricter content standards across platforms, aiming to align digital spaces globally with their religious-moral framework.
This influence often means:
- Stronger pressure on companies to block “immorality” (including nudity)
- Growing overlap between AI content policy and religious values
- Alignment with political figures like Donald Trump and figures like Reverend Doug Wilson, who openly promote a Christian moral code in public life
